A. Razmadze Mathematical Institute of Georgian Academy
of Sciences jointly with Georgian Statistical Association, under the financial
and organizational support of the International School in Physics and
Mathematics (ISPM Georgia) created by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science in
Europe will held Conference in Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics
during September, 21-27, 2003.
The Conference is devoted to the centenary of
great Russian mathematician, founder of modern probability theory A. N.
Kolmogorov.
The amount of participants is expected around 50. All talks are invited.
The length of each talk will be 50 min, unless the speaker prefers to speak for
shorter time.
Georgian mathematicians hosted quite a few conferences in the field of
probability theory and mathematical statistics. Some of them were quite big, for
example, the famous Tbilisi Conference in Probability Theory and Mathematical
Statistics of 1963, which is still well remembered by mathematicians of older
generation around the world. Another big conference was USSR-Japan Symposium in
Probability and Mathematical Statistics of 1982 (see Proceedings in Lecture
Notes in Mathematics, Vol. 1021, Springer, 1983). However, mostly the
probabilistic conferences in Georgia were of moderate size. In particular, the
Bakuriani Schools and Colloquia, with the first one as early as 1966, which
after 1969 were organized almost annually till 1990, usually had no more that
60-70 participants. All 23 of these famous meetings spirited with intense
scientific discussions.
A. N. Kolmogorov was among initiators and supporters of these conferences and
attended many of them.

The tradition to hold conferences in Probability and Statistics in Georgia is
still very much alive. One can reasonably hope to have a world class conference
this time as well. This will provide very good opportunity for young researchers
and for researchers from other regions outside mainstream countries to take part
and discuss their research in quiet but scientifically intense atmosphere.
Conditions in Tbilisi:
Very good quality accommodation is available at quite reasonable price.
The basic form of the public transport is provided by the very dense network of
mini-buses. One can recommend taxis, which are quite inexpensive.
Food in Tbilisi restaurants is very good. September-October are warm and
pleasant months in Tbilisi. Fruit will be excellent and wine is superb.
Travel to Tbilisi:
There are regular flights
to Tbilisi from Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona,
Frankfurt, Kiev, Milan, Moscow, Paris, Prague, Tel-Aviv, Vienna mainly arranged by the local Airzena flight company.
All members of the Programme Committee intend to come and take part in the
Conference. Besides, the Programme Committee has positive response from the
number of others.
